Hyderabad: Hyderabad is accelerating toward a cleaner public transport future, with the Telangana State Road Transport Corporation (TGSRTC) launching 60 new electric buses from the Kukatpally depot as part of its Green Challenge initiative. The move marks another significant push by the state govt to reduce urban pollution and strengthen sustainable mobility across the city.
Speaking after inaugurating the buses, transport minister Ponnam Prabhakar said the govt is determined to prevent Hyderabad from facing severe air pollution problems similar to those witnessed in Delhi. He stated that large-scale deployment of environment-friendly electric buses is a key part of the state’s long-term strategy to control rising pollution levels and modernise public transportation.
The minister revealed that Hyderabad currently operates around 540 electric buses, while nearly 1,050 EV buses are serving passengers across Telangana. He emphasised that the expansion of electric mobility is not only aimed at reducing vehicular emissions but also at offering commuters safer, quieter, and more comfortable travel experiences.
Addressing RTC employees and labour welfare issues, Ponnam Prabhakar announced that recognition elections for RTC workers’ unions would soon be conducted. Following the elections, the govt plans to initiate the RTC merger process in consultation with the elected unions. He also assured employees that the govt remains committed to implementing the Pay Revision Commission (PRC) and safeguarding workers’ welfare.
In a major outreach initiative, the minister said he would dedicate time every second Tuesday to directly hear grievances and concerns from RTC workers. The move is expected to strengthen communication between employees and the administration while addressing operational and welfare-related challenges more effectively.
TGSRTC managing director Y Nagi Reddy said the corporation is simultaneously expanding EV infrastructure by establishing advanced charging stations at major depots and bus stations. He noted that the new electric buses would help eliminate both air and noise pollution while ensuring smooth, safe, and technologically advanced travel for passengers.
Nagi Reddy further stated that TGSRTC is focused on balancing financial sustainability with improved passenger services. He added that the newly introduced electric buses are equipped to provide enhanced comfort and reliability, while also encouraging citizens to actively participate in environmental protection efforts by opting for eco-friendly public transport.
