Largest prayer hall in Hyderabad opens in all its splendour

Hyderabad: An architectural marvel with vibrant Persian and Gothic influence, the Ibadat Khana-e-Hussaini housing one of the biggest prayer halls in India, was formally opened to worshippers in the run-up to 13 Rajab, which commemorates the birth of Moula Ali.

An antithesis of modernist and contemporary architecture, the Ibadat Khana transcends the pilgrim to another realm with its sheer grandeur and stupendous amplitude in a symmetric fusion of ancient and technological dynamics.

Painstakingly built over four years, 300m off Alawa-e-Sartauq ashoorkhana in Darul Shifa, the magnificent, robust structure also forms a striking juxtaposition to the vast crumbling ensemble of Qutub Shahi legacy. What’s unique is the sprawling pillar-less, echo-proof prayer hall constructed with post-tensioning acoustic technology that can accommodate a congregation of over 3,500 azadars at a time for namaz, majlis and matam during Muharram. The state-of-the-art structure comprises a 18,000sqft cellar and ground floor hall of 10,080sqft .

The brain behind the project, Mir Hasnain Ali Khan, a software developer, said, “The Ibadat Khana-e-Hussaini is one of the biggest pillar-less prayer halls in India that has been aesthetically decorated with finest components from across the world. The ‘mehrab’ has been created by the finest marble inlay sculptors from Agra, the magnificent chandeliers were made in Kolkata and carpets were brought from Mashhad in Iran.”

The opening ceremony on Friday was graced by hundreds of worshippers, and religious scholars.

Hyderabad MP Asaduddin Owaisi was chief guest.
