Hyd to tap more from Manjeera

Hyderabad: After the Congress govt decided to divert Godavari water to fill Osmansagar and Himayatsagar for the drinking water requirements of the city, irrigation minister N Uttam Kumar Reddy has said water supplies from Manjeera (Singur) will be enhanced for Greater Hyderabad requirements. Apart from the twin reservoirs, Manjeera and Singur have been the major sources of Hyderabad's drinking water needs. He asked the officials to prepare plans at the earliest.
The minister said the state govt was committed to improving water resources and infrastructure, especially the projects in meeting the long-term irrigation and drinking water needs of Hyderabad and its surrounding areas.
Uttam Kumar Reddy, at a meeting at Jal Soudha on Wednesday, directed officials to finalise proposals for desilting the Singur reservoir to increase its water storage capacity.
He said the desilting work should be conducted in accordance with Central Water Resources Commission guidelines using advanced technology.
