has gone for pre-examination for the geographical indication (GI) tag at the registry in Chennai.
The president of Sir

Atreyapuram Putharekula Manufacturers Welfare Association Mundunuri Ramaraju has filed the application with the registry under the Geographical Indications of Goods (Registration and Protection) Act.
Putharekulu, also known as ‘paper sweet’, has been made for 300 years at

Atreyapuram

mandal of East Godavari district. The village of Atreyapuram has a lot of paddy cultivation.
“The homegrown rice becomes the core ingredient of Putharekulu. The belt of Konaseema is enriched with fertile soil, which enhances the quality of rice used in making the batter called ‘jaya biyyam.’ It takes almost 3-5 days to prepare the sweet. The climatic conditions and the richness of the soil makes the rice special,” said Ramaraju.
