Children argue over mom’s funeral, police settle matter

Hyderabad: Tension prevailed at the Darab Jung colony under Madannapet police station limits after the funeral rites of an elderly woman turned controversial.
Nawaz Begum alias K Ramulamma, 82, was a resident of Madannapet area. She was staying with her daughter Safia Begum alias K Gandamma for the last 12 years.
Due to ill-health, the 82 year old woman died at her Madannapet residence on Tuesday morning. According to police, following the death, the woman’s daughter decided to perform the last rites as per Islamic rituals but her brothers and their sons raised an objection saying that she should be creamated as per Hindu customs. The confrontation between the two sides of the family caused mild tension in the area. In a bid to contain any untoward incidents, police force from the newly formed South East zone was pressed into the service.
“We have intervened and discussed the matter with the family members from both the sides. The daughter’s side offered final prayers as per their customs and handed over the body to the other group, who have performed the last rites as per Hindu customs,” Madannapet police said.
