Anjani Kumar to supervise SIT now

HYDERABAD: In a surprise move, probably responding to charges that the Special Investigation Team (SIT) probing cases related to gangster

was not doing enough, additional director general of law & order Anjani Kumar has been appointed the supervisor of the SIT. The SIT is presently headed by inspector-general of police Y Nagi Reddy.

Analysts averred that the sudden move was also partly a reaction to a PIL filed in the high court by CPI leader Narayana on Monday. Alleging that the slain renegade Maoist-turned-gangster was created by police and politicians, Narayana questioned the logic of the state police conducting a probe into the cases against

and has sought a judicial probe. On August 10, director general of police Anurag Sharma had formed the SIT with eight members under the supervision of IG Nagi Reddy.

As of now, the SIT is probing 72 cases related to Nayeem's gang and so far 80 persons have been arrested. “The volume of investigation has increased exponentially and the existing strength of the SIT needs to be enhanced to cope with the same,“ the order stated. As per the new order on Tuesy, the DGP made Anjani Kumar day , the DGP made Anjani Kumar the monitoring officer of progress of the investigation along with Nagi Reddy so that the probe could be completed expeditiously.

Anjani Kumar would also liaise with other government departments for better investigation and conclusion of evidence, if needed, the order added.

Along with Anjani Kumar, some other cops have also been included in the SIT.

These are Priyadarshini, ASP & OSD, Karimnagar, S Sai Krishna, additional SP, Khammam, Md

, additional DCP , SB, Hyderabad, P Jaipal, ACP (traffic), Goshamahal and P Ramachandra Rao, inspector, Narsingi.

The DGP also asked the SIT to use the services of competent legal advisor to ensure that “all the evidence is marshalled properly for effective prosecution“.
