DHARWAD: Citizens’ Forum, under the banner of Karnataka State Women Anti-Harassment Federation, staged a silent protest at Swami Vivekananda Circle here on Saturday, venting their ire against the release of Bilkis Banu rape convicts.
The protesters stated that even though there is a direction from the Centre that rape convicts and murderers should not be released on good conduct under any condition, the Gujarat government, violating the government's order, has released 11 rape convicts, which is a matter of grave concern.
Retired judges and social thinkers, besides expressing their reservations against this decision of the government, have also demanded that the decision be reconsidered, the protesters said.
They further said that the release of the rape convicts was celebrated by some organisations which also accorded a warm reception to the rape convicts.
This incident has shamed the entire civil society and should be opposed tooth and nail, the protesters said.
