Koppal CCI pitches for 36-km railway extension
Koppal: The Koppal District Chamber of Commerce and Industry has urged the Union railway ministry to extend a railway line from Daroji to Gangavathi, stating that the proposed 36-km link would strengthen agricultural logistics, industrial growth and regional connectivity in Kalyana Karnataka.
In a representation submitted to the Union Railway Minister on June 4, chamber president Ashokswamy Herur welcomed the Union Cabinet’s approval for the third and fourth railway lines on the Ballari-Hosapete section.
He requested that the new infrastructure be utilised to establish a direct rail connection between Daroji in Ballari and Gangavathi in Koppal.
The representation said Gangavathi and Sindhanur taluks, known as the ‘Rice Bowl’ of Karnataka, would benefit from improved transportation of paddy and rice while facilitating the movement of fertilisers and pesticides into the region.
It also highlighted Gangavathi’s role as a major procurement centre for tractors and spare parts, stating that a rail link would reduce transportation costs for bulk materials such as steel and cement, providing a fillip to trade and industry.
According to the representation, an official railway survey has estimated the Daroji-Gangavathi stretch at 36 km, with a projected cost of Rs 705.4 crore, making it a cost-effective infrastructure project.
Herur said the proposed line would accelerate economic development in the Kalyana Karnataka region, increase logistical revenue for the Railways, and serve as a transport lifeline for farmers and traders.
The chamber urged the Union railway ministry to accord high priority to the project and direct the authorities concerned to expedite its approval and construction.
