KARD urges protection and strict action after assault on doctor at BRIMS
Bidar: Condemning the assault of a doctor at BRIMS, Karnataka Association of Resident Doctors (KARD) urged the state govt to ensure immediate protection and adequate security for doctors and healthcare staff at BRIMS in Bidar, particularly in the casualty and emergency wards. It has also demanded to direct the concerned authorities to conduct a fair and prompt investigation into the incident.
KARD office bearers have urged to initiate strict legal action against all accused under relevant provisions of the Karnataka Medicare Service Persons and Medical Service Institution (prevention of violence and damage to property) Act and other applicable laws. They have also demanded to issue directions for strict implementation of the said Act across all govt medical colleges and teaching hospitals in the state. “Govt should ensure that resident doctors and interns can work in safe environment free from fear of violence or intimidation,” they added.
Speaking to media, Bidar DC Shilpa Sharma said, “The accused in this case have already been arrested. We don’t have doctors commensurate with the population. There are fewer doctors. Doctors work under pressure. The public should also understand this. Dr Tukaram was attacked by a drunken person at night. Therefore, police patrolling near hospitals at night should be increased, and steps will be taken to appoint more security personnel,” she added.
BRIMS director Shantala Koujalagi said that, soon after the incident, police were informed and a complaint was registered. “This type of incidents are taking place repeatedly, and the district administration has assured that such incidents will not recur. It has also promised to provide more security to the hospital. Injured Dr Tukaram has no internal injuries and is being treated,” she stated.
