after crossing the Kushiyara river on a boat on Friday evening, police said on Saturday.

“Local residents said they saw a large boat carrying 20-25 people from the

side reaching Steamerghat Road point in Karimganj town, after crossing the swelling Kushiyara river around 8.30 pm on Friday. They immediately raised an alarm, lit torches, following which the boat rushed back towards the Bangladesh side,” said superintendent of police (Karimganj)

Padmanabha Baruah

on Saturday.

Talking to TOI, Baruah said, “We have brought the matter to the BSF’s notice. We are yet to confirm the identity of the people travelling by boat who allegedly attempted to land on Indian soil on Friday night. We have been waiting for the outcome of a possible flag meeting between the BSF and the BGB on the issue,” the SP said.

Local people of Steamerghat Road in Karimganj town on Saturday said they suspected that the “Bangladeshis” had planned to come to Karimganj to commit crimes such as theft and dacoity.
