JORHAT: Activists of All
Assam Chutia Students' Association (AACSA) staged a protest in
Jorhat
on Wednesday against the Citizenship Amendment Bill (CAB), which is likely to be introduced in the upcoming winter session of Parliament.
The students' body staged a sit-in outside the Jorhat deputy commissioner's office for about four hours from 11 am on Wednesday. A large number of activists, in their traditional attire, took part in the protest and unanimously demanded to the government to withdraw the bill.
The students' body also organised a protest meet at the same venue on the same issue. Representatives of several organisations, including All Assam Students' Union (Aasu) joined in the meeting and unanimously opposed the government's decision to reintroduce CAB in Parliament. They said the proposed bill was against the indigenous people in Assam and the northeast, and it will be a threat to the identity of indigenous people in the region.
The Centre had introduced the bill in Parliament on July 19, 2016. It was referred to Joint Parliamentary committee. Several organisations have since staged massive protests demanding the bill be withdrawn. Later, the bill lapsed following the dissolution of the Lok Sabha.
