GUWAHATI: Amid heavy to very heavy rain lashing isolated places in Assam and Meghalaya in the past 24 hours, the IMD has issued a 'red' alert in western Assam for Thursday and an 'orange' warning for both the NE states for the next two days.

Kokrajhar, Dhubri and South Salmara Mankachar districts of Assam bordering West Bengal and Bangladesh are on high alert.

A red alert by IMD is treated as an advisory for disaster management agencies to take action to prevent possible disastrous impact, while an orange alert is a call to be prepared for possible adverse impacts in the next two days.

The IMD on Wednesday said a low pressure area lies over western parts of Gangetic West Bengal and adjoining Jharkhand and the associated cyclonic circulation extends upto 7.6 km above mean sea levels tilting southwards with height and it is very likely to move nearly eastwards across West Bengal during the next 2-3 days. Due to the expected movement of this system, fairly widespread to widespread rainfall activity with heavy to very heavy along with extremely heavy rainfall and thunderstorms with lightning at isolated places is very likely to occur over Assam during the next 2-3 days.

The IMD issued a forecast of light to moderate rainfall, accompanied by thunderstorm and lightning with isolated heavy to very heavy rainfall over Assam, Meghalaya and Arunachal Pradesh till October 6 (Friday).
