Aizawl: Hailstorms have been striking the northern fringes of Mizoram, bordering Assam, for the past several days causing widespread destruction and damage to fields.

Early on Saturday, two villages in the state's northeastern Khawzawl district - Tualpui and Vankal - woke up to a fresh bout of hailstorm. At least 52 houses were damaged in the storm that hit the two villages around 2am.

Deputy commissioner (Khawzawl) K Lalrohlua said silpaulins have been distributed to the affected families while GCI roofs will also be soon distributed for reconstruction of the destroyed and damaged homes. This apart, financial assistance will also be given to the affected families from the state disaster response fund (SDRF), he assured.
