Ex-MLA held over controversial post
Dhubri: Former two-time MLA from Bilasipara (West) in Assam, Ali Akbar Mian, was arrested on Saturday over an alleged social media post on ‘qurbani’ (cow slaughter) and CM Himanta Biswa Sarma.
Sources said Mian allegedly wrote that if police came or interfered during ‘qurbani’, they would be slaughtered. Sources said he allegedly used indecent words against the CM.
Police picked up Mian around midnight from his residence in Bilasipara and brought him to Dhubri police station, where he was interrogated through the night. He reportedly fell ill in custody and was admitted to Dhubri Medical College and Hospital.
After his condition improved, Mian was produced before the Bilasipara sub-divisional judicial court which sent him to two-day police custody for further interrogation.
Dhubri SSP Debasish Bora said the arrest was made due to the communal tone of the statement and apprehensions of a breach of peace in the district on the eve of Eid.
