GUWAHATI: A court here in Guwahati on Tuesday sent Congress MLA from Baghbar constituency in lower Assam’s Barpeta district,

Sherman Ali Ahmed

, to two-day police custody again for his disrespectful remarks against the martyrs of the Assam Agitation (1979-1985).

He was produced before the court of the chief judicial magistrate, Kamrup (Metro) on Tuesday after the end of the custody period granted by the court.

Raj Brahma, officer-in-charge of Panbazar police station, said two more sections of Indian Penal Code (IPC) – 504 (intentional insult with intent to provoke breach of peace) and 504(2) (statements creating or promoting enmity, hatred or ill-will between classes) — have been added to the charges against Sherman.

Earlier, two charges — “provocation with intent to cause riot” and “promoting enmity between different groups on grounds of religion” — were slapped against the MLA.

Prior to the production of the MLA before the CJM court on Tuesday,

Sherman

was brought to Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH).

Police arrested the MLA late on Saturday night from the MLA hostel in Dispur. He was produced before the CJM court which sent him to two-day police custody.

The court has directed the police to make arrangements to ensure appropriate medical treatment for Sherman as he is a “cardiac and diabetic patient”. The direction was given by the court on prayer of the advocate of the accused.

The Assam unit of the Congress suspended the MLA from the party for “repeatedly violating party discipline” by making communal remarks.

He had called the martyrs of the Assam anti-foreigners movement “assassins”, which triggered widespread protests across the state. Following this, various organisations and people filed FIRs in 21 police stations across the state.

The Congress had earlier issued a showcause notice to Sherman for his remarks. He could not submit a reply in the three-day time period, which ended on Monday.
