94 special polling stations for voters living in Manipur relief camps

GUWAHATI: The Election Commission (EC) has notified 94 special polling stations under the two Lok Sabha constituencies of Manipur for voters living in 438 relief camps, who were displaced from their homes during the ethnic strife in the state since May 3 last year, to exercise their franchise.

The EC has rolled out a scheme which will also include internally displaced people staying with their relatives and friends.

They can also choose the “special polling station” where they would like to exercise their franchise.

Manipur joint chief electoral officer Ramananda Nongmeikapam told TOI that this scheme will also apply to those internally displaced people who have gone outside the state.

“We have enough provisions for voting by the IDPs. If at all the displaced people staying outside the state wish to vote, they can come and vote. They can opt to vote either at relief camps or wherever notified by the district election officers concerned,” the joint CEO said, adding, the displaced people could be living not just in Mizoram but in other states or even outside the country, all of them can come to the state to vote.
