Guwahati: A 23-year-old man was arrested on Saturday for allegedly stabbing his estranged girlfriend to death in Kamrup (Metropolitan) district.
According to the police, the victim was 18-years-old. The incident occurred on Friday, and Mallik fled the scene immediately after. However, he was arrested within 12 hours of the incident.
The locals found her body in a paddy field, following which they informed the police.
“We produced the accused before the court, and were granted a three-day police remand. He was arrested under Section 103(1) of the BNS Act,” said Tanmoy Nath, police station’s officer-in-charge.
According to Nath, the duo had a troubled past, and during interrogation, the accused confessed that he was in a relationship with the girl last year, during which he impregnated her. After her parents found out about the pregnancy, they filed a case against him at Khetri PS.
“Back then, he was arrested on rape charges under the Pocso Act, convicted by a court and sent to jail. He was released around two months ago on bail. After his release, he reportedly tried to meet the girl in an attempt to reestablish their relationship. However, when he got to know that the girl was in a relationship with someone else, he stabbed her multiple times, leading to her death,” the officer added.
While being taken to court, the accused spoke to the local media and confessed to killing her.
