State board to set up examination centres near homes for students with muscular dystrophy
Earlier this year, several students who have been diagnosed with the condition had sent in applications to the board, requesting officials to allow them to take the exams from their residence.
As the first student to submit such an application, class 10 student Aryansh, from Narwana in Jind, was permitted to take his exam from his home.
Following this, three to four more students submitted such applications, leading the board to review the current arrangement for such students.
“While such students face a hard time commuting themselves, transporting them also poses several challenges for their families. Hence, we have decided to review the existing norm and formulate a policy to ease their woes during Board examinations,” VP Yadav, chairman of Haryana board, said.
Muscular dystrophy is a genetic or acquired condition that weakens the muscles. Its genetic form is the most common.
Types of muscular dystrophy include duchenne dystrophy and emery-dreifuss dystrophy — which affect children under 5 years, becker and limb-girdle which affects those ages 5-15 years, oculopharyngeal which affects people ages 30-80 years, facioscapulohumeral which affects those ages 7-30 years, and myotonic myopathy which affects ages 8-50 years. Myotonic dystrophy, which is the most common, can occur at any age.
