Sawant announces dedicated fisheries college for state
PANAJI: Chief minister Pramod Sawant on Tuesday said Goa is on the path to establishing a dedicated fisheries college offering a bachelor's degree in fisheries science.
Presently, students aspiring to take up fisheries studies have three reserved seats for a programme in fisheries science at a Dabolim-based institute, with state government shouldering the associated expenses.
Sawant stressed the critical role of the fisheries industry in contributing to the blue economy, framing it as a source of enduring economic strength.
"I urge the Goan youth to seize the opportunity by pursuing not only bachelor's degrees but also Master's and PhDs in fisheries. This will open up avenues for in-depth research and exploration within the field," the chief minister said.
The state recently set up its first agriculture college and plans are under way for the establishment of a veterinary college, too.
Underlining the broader spectrum of opportunities, Sawant drew attention to the PM Vishwakarma Scheme, presenting the prospect of a fishnet-making course and various diploma programmes.
"This initiative not only propels the state's blue economy aspirations but also offers a promising pathway for young minds to contribute to sustainable practices and innovations in fisheries science," Sawant said.
