Ponda municipal council to float fresh tender for sopo collection

Ponda: After having failed to get bids twice, the Ponda Municipal Council (PMC) on Tuesday resolved to float a tender yet again for sopo (tax).

Anand Naik, chairing the first meeting after his election to the top post, said they have decided to auction the sopo collection till March 31, with the amount fixed at Rs 32 lakh.

While municipal council collects sopo from street vendors across the town through a private party, its staff collects a similar tax from vendors operating within the shed at Budhawar Peth-Upper Bazar.

The municipal council has also decided to auction shops in the market complex at Budhwar Peth.

Councillor Venkatesh Naik suggested shops be auctioned floor-wise to attract better bids. He also asked the council to have the budget draft ready by Dec and not wait till Feb.
