Pernem temple swaps full tree for branches for Shigmo ritual

Mapusa: In a departure from centuries-old tradition, the Shree Bhagwati Devasthan in Parsem, Pernem, has announced a ‘green’ shift for this year’s Shigmotsav celebration. Breaking a long-standing ritual that involves felling an entire mango tree to serve as the ceremonial pole for Shigmo, the temple committee has resolved to use a single branch instead to preserve the environment without compromising religious sentiment.

For generations, the ritualistic felling of a tall, straight mango tree has been central to the festivities at the village maand. However, recognising the ecological toll of losing a mature tree every year, the devasthan committee, led by president Pradeep Desai, chose to opt for a sustainable alternative.


“Cutting down a whole tree annually for a single day’s ritual causes significant environmental damage. By using a branch, we ensure the tradition survives while the tree continues to live and breathe,” said Desai.

The ripple effect of this decision has already reached neighbouring villages. The Sateri Devasthan in Agarwada, which traditionally receives a mango tree from Parsem for its own celebrations, has formally consented to the request to use a branch this year.

Environmentalists have hailed the move as a potential blueprint for other temples across Goa. While mango trees are traditionally chosen for their auspiciousness and link to the upcoming Gudi Padwa festivities, the Parsem model proves that religious customs can evolve.
