Fishermen reel in more trash than fish at Agonda beach

Canacona: Large quantities of debris and plastic waste have washed ashore on the Agonda beach over the last four days.

Fishermen have been complaining that they have been netting more waste and debris than fish.

Krishna Pagi, a fisherman, said they had stopped paim-voddo, a traditional fishing method, as most of the time plastic scraps and other junk are getting caught in their nets.

Another fisherman, Pramod Dhuri, said even fishermen who venture into high seas face the same problem.

Dhuri said there should be a greater level of awareness to discourage people from mindlessly discarding plastic and other waste. Often, such remnants when dumped into natural water bodies cause contamination.

Moreover, Agonda beach, which is considered to be cleaner than other beaches in the state, is getting dirtier, Dhuri said.

With waste being washed shore regularly, beach patches can be seen infested with plastic, although the tourism department has appointed people to remove trash from the beach.
