Calangute marathon to focus on waste

Calangute: The popular North Goa beach destination, Calangute, will play host to a marathon on Republic Day. Titled ‘Clean Calangute’ the initiative aims at creating awareness about the garbage problem.

Speaking to TOI, Calangute sarpanch Shawn Martins said the panchayat supports the race, an initiative by a private sports events company which has been holding sports events in Calangute.

The run will be held across three categories — 3km, 5km and 10km, and the marathon route will wind its way through different parts of Calangute, Baga and Arpora-Nagoa.

“We thought this would be a good opportunity to increase awareness about the garbage problem. We have already put in place a system of garbage collection. Now we need the cooperation of the people to ensure that Calangute remains clean. These messages will be predominantly displayed along the marathon route,” Martins said.
