Panaji
: Instead of engaging a renowned name from the film industry to design the decor for the 47th International Film Festival of India (
Iffi
) to be hosted by Goa from November 20 to 28 this year, the
Entertainment
Society of Goa (
ESG
) employed a new method to select designers for the festival venues in 2016.
Tenders were called from interested designers and five such artists presented their concepts for the festival venue décor. Of these, one designer was selected to create the ambience through design at Iffi and the décor for sets for various festival events, ESG's executive member
Rajendra Talak said.
With 70% weightage given to the design and technical aspects and 30% to the financial bid by the designer, the bill for the décor is also expected to be lower this year.
Talak
said that the appointment of the vendor for the job was done based on ‘combined quality cum cost based selection'.
"The criteria for selection included experience in managing national/international events during the last three years, annual turnover during the last three years, peacock design, complete concept design, decor work, infrastructure material used, lighting of the entire art decor installations at all the venues and technical presentation showing approach and methodology of the decor work," Talak said.
Last year, four-time national award winning art director of ‘Baahubali' fame,
Sabu Cyril, was engaged by the festival organizers to design the festival venue décor. The designer engaged for Iffi provides designs for the sets for the festival opening and closing ceremony and the festival film screening venues and general festival areas.
Since 2011, India's top art directors have been leading the design team at Iffi including the likes of Thota Tharani, Nitin Desai, Pulak Gogoi and
Sushant Tari
.
This year, instead of the organizers inviting an art director based on their choice, it was decided to make the process transparent.
