Water release into Bhavani canal stopped
ERODE: Water discharge from Bhavanisagar dam into Lower Bhavani canal (LBC) was halted on Tuesday after a leak was spotted in a rainwater drainage channel, which runs diagonally at the bottom of the canal. The leak was noticed at the 47th mile of LBC at Pethampalayam near Perundurai in Erode district.
Water resources department officials inspected the spot and have begun work to fix the leakage. An official told TOI, "We stopped releasing water into the Lower Bhavani canal this morning, to prevent risk of the canal breaking due to the leak." He also expressed hope that the work would be completed in a couple of days.
On Aug 15, water was released from the dam into canals, to irrigate 1.35 lakh acres across Erode, Tiruppur, and Karur districts, over 120 days.
