ERODE: The DMK hit back at the AIADMK for questioning the state government's plans to build a 'pen monument' for the late chief minister M Karunaidhi.
Talking to reporters on the sidelines of an election campaign in Erode East constituency on Friday, state industries minister Thangam Thennarasu pointed out that the AIADMK too built a gigantic 'two leaves' structure in the memorial for their leader J Jayalalithaa.
"Those who oppose the pen monument should explain why they built the two leaves structure and from which fund they did so," Thangam Thennarasu said. EPS said a day ago that the government could build pen monument in 2 crore instead of 81 crore and save government funds.
Reacting strongly to other the allegations levelled by EPS, Thangam Thennarasu said it was the AIADMK leader who was spreading false information 'driven by fear of defeat' in the bypoll. EPS alleges that the DMK government was ignoring the plight of farmers, but it was the AIADMK that betrayed farmers by supporting three 'anti-farmer bills' brought by their ally BJP, he said.
On fiscal management, Thennarasu said the DMK has brought down the borrowings of the state government and reduced debt, though the AIADMK government which ruled the state for 10 years left the state's coffers empty.
The DMK government has also rolled out several new schemes including free breakfast for school children and 'Makkalai Thedi Maruthuvam,' he said. "It was the AIADMK government that was riddled with corruption. People sent the AIADMK government packing because of their corruption and misgovernance," he alleged.
