Erode: A house near Sathyamangalam here caught fire on Sunday, when a lamp placed in the puja room fell on some clothes, resulting in a fire.

A preliminary inquiry revealed that household goods worth ₹2 lakh were gutted in the fire.

The incident took place at the house belonging to M Murugesan, 49, of Sathyamangalam, who runs a fish and meat shop in town.

A police officer from the Sathyamangalam station said the couple performed a puja at home around 5am and left for their shop. They left the lamp burning. Their daughter Karpagam, 12, stayed back at home.

Around 6.30am, thick smoke started emanating from the house.

Karpagam rushed out of the house and sought help. Fire and rescue services personnel rushed to the spot and extinguished the fire. Police have registered a case and initiated an inquiry.
