Two booked with gold concealed inside chocolates
New Delhi: Two passengers, who arrived from Riyadh at Delhi airport, have been booked for trying to smuggle gold concealed inside chocolates. A total of 396 grams of gold was recovered from them.
Officials said they arrived at IGI Airport on May 17. “During screening at the Green Channel, both passengers were diverted for X-ray examination of their baggage. On scanning, suspicious images were noticed inside the chocolate packets carried by the passengers. The packets were detained on suspicion of concealment of gold in dust form and sent for detailed examination and recovery,” said a customs official.
After furnace recovery, a total of 396 grams of gold of 999.9 purity, concealed inside chocolates, was recovered in the two cases—200 grams and 196 grams. “The recovered gold was seized under the provisions of the Customs Act, 1962, and cases have been booked against the passengers,” said the official. He added that further investigation is underway.
