Delhi Police SWAT commando was pregnant when killed by husband; cops add dowry harassment charge to case

NEW DELHI: Kajal Chaudhary, the 24-year-old SWAT commando of Delhi Police who died allegedly after being attacked by her husband in southwest Delhi's Mohan Garden, was four months pregnant, the victim's brother, Nikhil, said on Thursday.

Following Kajal's death on Tuesday, five days after the attack, police have added sections of murder and dowry to the case. A senior officer said the dowry section was added after her family alleged harassment.




Accused Ankur Chaudhary was arrested soon after the attack and sent to Tihar Jail in judicial custody. Police intimated the Union defence ministry where Ankur worked as a clerk and he has been suspended. "He struck her head at least three times against the door frame and then attacked her with a dumbbell," the officer said. Police have questioned Ankur's relatives.

According to the FIR, Kajal's brother stated that Ankur and his family had repeatedly humiliated his sister over dowry and tensions escalated even after Kajal had given birth to a son in 2024.

"Frustrated by the constant taunts and harassment, my sister told me that she could no longer endure the situation. I spoke to her husband and he agreed to arrange a separate flat for them in Delhi," Nikhil, a constable with Delhi Police, said. "In 2024, he acquired a flat in Mohan Garden. However, even there, he began arguing with my sister, blaming her for ‘ruining his life' and ‘keeping him away from his family'. To avoid further conflict, my sister chose to return and stay at her parental home in Gannaur in Haryana," he said in the FIR.

The couple's one-and-a-half-year-old son has been living with Kajal's family since the attack. "She was our only sister among two brothers. I was selected for Delhi Police in 2018, and seeing me, she also decided to join police. She worked hard to get selected," said Nikhil.

On Jan 22, Kajal called him when the argument escalated, Nikhil said, claiming that while he was still on the phone with his sister, Ankur began hitting her on the head with the dumbbell. "Five minutes later, Ankur called me and bluntly informed me of the assault."

Ankur had taken Kajal to a local hospital. Two days later, her family shifted her to a Ghaziabad hospital, given the seriousness of her injuries. Three days later, Kajal died.
