Rs 33,500-crore development push for Delhi: PM Narendra Modi to inaugurate key Metro corridors and more; what you need to know

NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate and also lay the foundation stone of multiple development projects in the city worth around Rs 33,500 crore at a public event on Sunday.

The event will be held at the DDA ground on Burari Road near Sant Nirankari Mandal from 10am.


While the extensions of two corridors of Delhi Metro — the Majlis Park-Maujpur (Pink Line) and Deepali Chowk-Majlis Park (Magenta Line) — will be inaugurated, the foundation stone for three more corridors will be laid under the metro’s Phase V-A expansion plan.

Redevelopment projects worth Rs 15,200 crore under the General Pool Residential Accommodation (GPRA) plan will also be inaugurated. The projects are part of govt’s programme to modernise GPRA colonies and create world-class infrastructure for govt employees and administrative offices. According to officials, these projects have been developed through an innovative self-sustaining financial model without placing any additional burden on the public exchequer.

Chief minister Rekha Gupta said the metro projects would mark a significant step towards a faster, smoother and environmentally friendly public transport system in the city. “These projects will not only provide improved convenience for commuters but will also help reduce the pressure of private vehicles on roads and strengthen efforts to control pollution,” she said.

CM added that Delhi govt was working in close coordination with central govt to further strengthen the public transport network in line with the vision of Prime Minister Modi. “Improved public transport will reduce people’s dependence on private vehicles, thereby helping ease traffic congestion and curb pollution.”


The benefits of the new metro stretches will extend beyond Delhi to neighbouring cities in National Capital Region as commuters from Noida,Faridabad and Ballabhgarh will gain improved connectivity through the interlinked routes, Gupta said.

Under the GPRA project, Centre isredeveloping seven ageing govt housing colonies in the city, spread across about 537 acres and covering Sarojini Nagar, Netaji Nagar, Nauroji Nagar, Kasturba Nagar, Thyagraj Nagar, Sriniwaspuri and Mohammadpur.
Many of the existing residential quarters in these colonies had become old and structurally unsafe, with nearly 40% declared uninhabitable. At the same time, the authorities faced a shortage of more than 20,000 homes for central govt employees. The redevelopment will replace the old low-rise buildings with modern high-rise residential complexes, providing over 21,000 new flats along with upgraded infrastructure and public facilities.

PM Modi will inaugurate 2,722 of these flats and lay the foundation stone for 6,632 more under the GPRA redevelopment plan across Sarojini Nagar, Netaji Nagar, Kasturba Nagar and Sriniwaspuri on Sunday.

Under its self-sustaining financial model, instead of using taxpayers’ money, govt is developing and monetising a limited portion of the project area for commercial and residential space to finance the entire work. The redevelopment works will provide more than 9,350 modern flats for govt employees, along with creating approximately 48 lakh square feet of office space, in these four areas, significantly enhancing administrative efficiency while also generating monetisation potential, said officials.

A small portion of the land, which is about 69.4 acres, or 12.9% of the total project area, is being developed for commercial and residential use. The revenue from this limited land monetisation is expected to generate over Rs 35,100 crore, which will cover the total estimated redevelopment cost of around Rs 32,800 crore.
