Premium travel, stricter refunds: Check out the new rules for Vande Bharat Sleeper trains

Premium train, premium rules

Indian Railways has introduced significantly stricter cancellation norms for its newly launched Vande Bharat Sleeper trains, signalling a clear departure from the refund rules that apply to conventional long-distance and chair-car services. The revised policy comes just ahead of the commencement of regular commercial operations of these premium overnight trains.

2/10

Cancellation becomes costly from day one

Unlike other trains where early cancellations attract minimal charges, any cancellation of a confirmed Vande Bharat Sleeper ticket will now lead to a 25% deduction, even if the ticket is cancelled immediately after booking. Railways officials said the rule is meant to discourage speculative bookings on high-demand services.

3/10

50% refund cut up to 72–8 Hours before departure

The penalty rises sharply if passengers cancel closer to travel. A 50% cancellation charge will apply if tickets are cancelled between 72 hours and eight hours before departure, making Vande Bharat Sleeper trains among the strictest in terms of refund rules in the Indian Railways network.

4/10

No refund within 8 hours of departure

Passengers cancelling their confirmed tickets within eight hours of scheduled departure will receive no refund at all. This is a major change compared to other trains, where refunds are possible until four hours before departure under certain conditions.

5/10

Earlier chart preparation drives rule change

Railway officials said the new cancellation framework is linked to operational changes. Reservation charts for Vande Bharat Sleeper trains will now be prepared eight hours before departure, double the earlier four-hour timeline, leaving less room for last-minute cancellations and seat reshuffling.

6/10

No RAC, only confirmed tickets

A key difference with Vande Bharat Sleeper services is that only confirmed tickets will be issued. There will be no Reservation Against Cancellation (RAC) option, meaning every cancelled ticket directly impacts capacity planning and revenue, prompting stricter penalties.

7/10

How it differs from other trains

For other trains, passengers are charged flat cancellation fees if tickets are cancelled early, followed by graded deductions closer to departure. In contrast, Vande Bharat Sleeper trains use percentage-based deductions, making cancellations significantly more expensive even days before travel.

8/10

Minimum fare distance set at 400 km

The Railway Board has fixed a minimum chargeable distance of 400 km for Vande Bharat Sleeper trains, underlining their role as premium long-distance overnight services. Short-distance travel on these trains will not be economically viable under the new fare structure.

9/10

Limited quotas, no general reservations

Only select reservation categories will apply on these trains — women passengers, senior citizens, persons with disabilities and duty pass holders. No other quotas or special reservations will be allowed, ensuring streamlined bookings and fewer vacant berths.

10/10

Comfort comes with commitment

With faster travel, modern sleeper coaches and limited availability, Vande Bharat Sleeper trains are positioned as a premium product that demands firmer travel commitment. Railways officials say the stricter cancellation policy is aimed at reducing last-minute dropouts and improving overall seat utilisation.
