"Thunderstorm with light to moderate intensity rain and gusty winds with speed of 40-60 Km/h would continue to occur over and adjoining areas of entire Delhi and Karnal, Panipat, Gannaur, Meham, Rohtak, Bhiwani (Haryana) Kandhla, Baraut, Bagpat (UP) during next 2 hours," tweeted IMD.

Delhi's AQI worst in 3 months


Delhi’s air quality deteriorated to ‘very poor’ category on Wednesday after a gap of nearly three months due to the presence of higher dust concentration in the air. The Air Quality Index (AQI) reached 397 at the higher end of ‘very poor’ category at 8 am on Wednesday but improved slightly to 336 at 4 pm. The air quality is predicted to enter ‘poor’ category on Thursday.

Central Pollution Control Board’s data shows that the last time Delhi saw a ‘very poor’ air day was on February 22 with an AQI of 302. The national capital’s AQI was 162 in ‘moderate’ category on Monday and 254 in ‘poor’ category on Tuesday.

According to Air Quality Early Warning System for Delhi, the forecasting body under the union ministry of earth sciences, the air quality remained in ‘very poor’ category on Wednesday owing to high dust concentration. The air quality is likely to remain in ‘poor’ category from Thursday to Saturday.

Meanwhile, the weather department expects very light rain or drizzle on Thursday, which may bring a temporary and marginal respite from the heat. According to India Meteorological Department, parts of north Delhi saw very light rain between late Tuesday night and early Wednesday morning. Narela recorded 0.5mm rainfall till 8.30am.

“There are chances of rain on Thursday as well due to an active western disturbance. Some isolated areas of the city may see rain towards afternoon or evening,” said Kuldeep Srivastava, scientists at IMD.

On Wednesday, the maximum temperature at Safdarjung, the city’s base station, was 41. 1 degrees Celsius as against 39. 9 degrees Celsius a day earlier. At Sports Complex and Najafgarh stations, the mercury crossed 43 degrees Celsius. The minimum temperature was 25. 4 degrees Celsius compared with 27. 4 degrees Celsius a day earlier.

The maximum and minimum temperatures on Thursday may hover around 40 and 26 degrees Celsius, respectively.
