On the run for 29 years, man wanted for kidnapping held

New Delhi: On the run for almost three decades, a 58-year-old man has been arrested from south Delhi area in connection with an abduction case. Suspect Aftab Ahmad had allegedly kidnapped then a 15-year-old girl and fled with her for the purpose of marriage, police said on Tuesday.

The incident occurred in 1995 when Ahmad took the minor girl to Nepal. "A case was registered by the girl’s family under relevant sections for kidnapping, and the accused was declared a proclaimed offender in 1997. Over the years, the accused moved across Nepal's boundaries and changed his location frequently within various states of the country to evade arrest. He performed odd jobs and lived in makeshift homes across Bihar, Mumbai, UP, and Delhi," said Ankit Chauhan, deputy commissioner of police (South).

On April 29, police received a tip-off regarding the suspect’s presence in Faridabad. “The information was further developed, and following an interstate raid, Ahmad was nabbed and has been remanded to judicial custody,” the DCP added.
