NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court on Thursday provided interim relief to veteran Telugu actor Mohan Babu, instructing police not to take coercive action against him in a case of alleged assault on a journalist.
A bench of Justices Sudhanshu Dhulia and Prashant Kumar Mishra issued a notice to the state police, requiring their response within four weeks. The relief follows Babu’s appeal against a December 23 Telangana High Court order rejecting his anticipatory bail plea.
The allegations claim that Babu threw a wireless microphone at a journalist, resulting in serious injuries.
During the hearing, senior advocate Mukul Rohatgi, appearing for Babu, argued that the incident stemmed from a family dispute. He explained that Babu’s estranged son entered his residence with a media crew of 20-30 people, leading to a heated confrontation in which Babu threw the mic. Rohatgi further stated that Babu is open to issuing a public apology and offering compensation.
The journalist’s counsel contested this, emphasising the severity of the injuries, which required reconstructive jaw surgery, five days of hospitalization and tube feeding.
