Yellow alert issued in Delhi for next 2 days: Rain discriminates! Some parts receive intense spell
Safdarjung, which is the city’s base station, logged 30.8mm of rainfall between 8.30am and 5.30pm on Tuesday. Lodhi Road received 35mm rain in the same period. However, other stations in the city recorded light rain — 11.3mm on the Ridge, 10.5mm at Delhi University, 8.5mm at Palam, and 8mm at Ayanagar.
Met department on Monday had predicted very light to light rain for Tuesday and residents were caught off-guard. A Met official said: “High humidity led to the formation of local convective clouds, leading to rain on Tuesday. Light to moderate showers were recorded across the city.”
IMD’s data shows that since the arrival of the monsoon on June 28 in Delhi, this was the second intense spell of rain for Safdarjung this year.
On June 28, Safdarjung had received extremely heavy rainfall of 228.1mm in a day. However, the base station had seen only light to very light rain before the onset of monsoon.
In July, up to Tuesday at 5.30pm, Safdarjung has recorded 41.2mm of rainfall. “There is a possibility of very light to light showers on Wednesday. However, the city may again experience an intense spell of light to moderate rain along with a thunderstorm or lightning on Thursday and Friday... due to moisture supply from Arabian Sea,” a Met official said.
The maximum temperature was recorded at 33.2 degrees Celsius, three degrees below normal, on Tuesday, as against 32.2 a day earlier. The minimum temperature stood at 27.2 degrees Celsius. The relative humidity oscillated between 74% and 98%.
IMD had predicted that the maximum temperature is likely to remain around 34-35 degrees Celsius till Friday, while the minimum temperature is expected to stay around 25-27 degrees Celsius during the same period.
Delhi’s air quality, meanwhile, continued to remain in the satisfactory range for the sixth consecutive day with an Air Quality Index at 86. It is likely to remain in this range till July 12.
