Electrocuted or murdered? Wife, brother-in-law held for Delhi jeweller’s death; cops probe affair angle
NEW DELHI: The death of a 36-year-old man, initially believed to have been due to accidental electrocution, is now the subject of a murder investigation after Delhi Police found signs of foul play.
His wife who allegedly rushed him to the hospital has been apprehended.
The victim, Karan Dev, a resident of Om Vihar in west Delhi, who owned an artificial jewellery business, was brought to the hospital on July 13 by his wife, who claimed he had suffered an electric shock.
He was declared brought dead by the hospital authorities and later shifted to Deen Dayal Upadhyay Hospital for a post-mortem.
The family said they didn't suspect foul play and even expressed their wish to waive off the post-mortem.
However, given the relatively young age of the deceased and the unclear circumstances of his death, police decided to proceed with the autopsy.
The case took a turn on July 16 when Dev's brother, Kunal, approached the cops and told them of his suspicions about the nature of his brother's death. "Following Kunal's statement, a preliminary inquiry was conducted. Based on the findings of the inquest proceedings and other material evidence, a case was registered, including that of murder," a police officer said.

During the investigation, police found inconsistencies in the statements and evidence, which suggested that the electrocution might not have been accidental. Police sources disclosed the information that the wife had come to the hospital in a panic, but certain details hadn't added up when she reported the tragedy.
Forensic and circumstantial analysis pointed to possible foul play. Subsequently, the cops apprehended Dev's wife and his brother-in-law. They are currently being questioned in connection with the incident. A police source suggested that the victim allegedly suspected his wife of an extramarital affair. This could be one motive for his murder, but the cops are looking at other possible motives too.
