NEW DELHI: Majid Choudhary, accused in the fatal shooting of a woman during a violent road rage incident in east Delhi's Gukulpuri area, was arrested after a police encounter on Friday.
During the encounter, Majid (28) sustained gunshot wounds to his legs. Police seized a pistol with three live rounds and a stolen motorcycle from his possession.
The incident unfolded on Wednesday afternoon when a couple, accompanied by their two children and en route to a bank, narrowly avoided a collision with a scooty. The encounter escalated into a fatal confrontation, resulting in the scooty rider chasing the family and firing shots, which claimed the life of 25-year-old Simranjit Kaur.
Simranjit, wife of a gurdwara manager Hira Singh who also operated an ambulance service, was shot under the Gokalpuri flyover between 2.45 pm and 3 pm. The family, residents of Bhalswa, was riding an Enfield motorcycle towards Jyoti Nagar when the incident occurred.
Majid, riding recklessly on the scooty, allegedly passed their vehicle at high speed, sparking a heated argument with Singh. Eyewitnesses reported that Majid made inappropriate comments towards Simranjit, escalating tensions further. The situation quickly deteriorated as Majid pursued the family while brandishing a firearm.
A bullet intended for Singh struck Simranjit Kaur in the chest, fatally injuring her. Despite Singh's frantic efforts to rush his wife to a nearby hospital in an autorickshaw, she succumbed to her injuries before receiving medical attention. Police were notified of the incident around 3.15 pm, prompting an immediate response to the crime scene.
