Delhi Police cracks snatching case, secures conviction in 12 days
New Delhi: After securing a conviction in a case within 18 days, Delhi Police has set a new benchmark by securing conviction in a snatching case within just 12 days.
Sources said the push is part of a broader directive from the MHA and the police chief to fast-track cases registered under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).
The incident occurred on May 14 near Gandhi Market Gol Chakkar in central Delhi’s IP Estate. The complainant, a taxi driver from Aligarh, dropped passengers and was resting in his vehicle when a man snatched his mobile phone and tried to flee.
DCP (Central) Rohit Rajbir Singh said the driver raised an alarm and chased the accused. Constable Rahul, on patrol, spotted the incident, intercepted the accused after a brief chase, and recovered the stolen phone.
Police recorded the recovery through audio-video documentation using the e-Sakshya app in compliance with Section 105 of the BNSS, ensuring transparency and strengthening evidentiary value.
A case was registered the same day under relevant sections of the BNS, and the investigation was prioritised. The chargesheet was filed quickly, with the case instituted within four days.
“During the trial, the prosecution ensured systematic examination of witnesses and proper presentation of documentary and electronic evidence. The accused was convicted on May 26, within 12 days of the incident,” police said.
DCP Singh said the swift conviction highlights the role of technology-driven investigation and coordinated efforts between police and prosecution in ensuring timely justice.
Earlier this month, Delhi Police secured the conviction of a man accused of assaulting and robbing a woman in Outer Delhi’s Shahbad Dairy within 18 days of the crime, with the chargesheet filed in just five days and the trial court conducting day-to-day proceedings.
