NEW DELHI: Extending her government's support to Sonam Wangchuk, Delhi chief minister Atishi on Tuesday said that she will visit Bawana Police Station in the city to meet the Ladakh activist detained by the Delhi Police at 1pm.
Activist and education reformer Sonam Wangchuk, along with 150 Ladakhis, has been detained since Monday night for allegedly violating prohibitory orders.
Wangchuk is currently on his “Chalo Delhi Climate March,” which he began in Leh on September 1.
Delhi CM Atishi posted on X: "I will go to Bawana police station to meet Sonam Wangchuk today at 1pm. Sonam Wangchuk and our 150 Ladakhi brothers and sisters were coming to Delhi peacefully. The police have stopped them. They have been imprisoned in Bawana police station since last night."
Wangchuk also took to X to inform about his detention.
Wangchuk posted on X: "Am being detained… along with 150 padyatris at Delhi Border, by a police force of 100s, some say 1,000. Many elderly men & women in their 80s and few dozen Army veterans... Our fate is unknown. We were on a most peace
ful march to Bapu’s Samadhi... in the largest democracy in the world, the mother of democracy... (sic)"
Wangchuk and other volunteers were on a foot march from Leh to New Delhi to urge the central government to resume dialogue with Ladakh's leadership regarding their demands.
One of their main demands is for Ladakh to be included in the Sixth Schedule of the Constitution, which would grant law-making powers to the local population to protect their land and cultural identity.
The Sixth Schedule of the Constitution governs tribal areas in Assam, Meghalaya, Tripura, and Mizoram in Northeast India. It establishes autonomous councils with legislative, judicial, executive, and financial powers, allowing these regions to self-govern independently.
