At some stations in Delhi, the air quality even turned ‘severe’. AQI at Bawana was 431 at 5pm while Mundka recorded it at 420, Punjabi Bagh at 408 and Jahangirpuri at 407. Nehru Nagar, Rohini and Wazirpur reported it at 402 each.
Satellites detected 513 paddy residue burning events in Punjab, 110 in Uttar Pradesh and 54 in Haryana. The share of stubble burning in Delhi’s PM2.5 was estimated at 10.24% on Tuesday against 2.25% on Monday, according to the Decision Support System, the forecasting body under the Union ministry of earth sciences.
Wind speed picked up during the day, but failed to improve the air quality. After calm winds on Monday night and the early hours of Tuesday, “wind speed increased up to 15kmph for a few hours during the day. Calm wind conditions are unlikely on Tuesday night as winds are likely to pick up”, said an official of the meteorological department. But it is predicted to decrease from Wednesday evening. “Winds at the speed of 10 to 12kmph are likely to blow on Wednesday till noon,” said an official.
TOI had reported on Monday that November was turning out to be the second most polluted month in the past six years after 2021. The month has already witnessed nine ‘severe’ and nine ‘very poor’ days. Of the nine ‘very poor’ days, the readings were above 390 on four days.
Low wind speed & dip in mercury turn air quality 'very poor' again in Gurgaon
Air quality in Gurgaon, India, returned to "very poor" levels on Thursday, undoing the progress made the previous day in reducing pollution. The city's average air quality index was recorded at 363, 22% higher than the previous day. The highest pollution levels were recorded at the Section 51 monitoring station, with an average AQI of 406, classified as "severe". The deterioration in air quality has been attributed to meteorological conditions, uncontrolled emissions, and the burning of crop stubble. The situation is expected to worsen in the coming days as temperatures drop and wind speed remains low.
Air quality improves as winds help clear haze, but remains very poor
Gurgaon's air quality index (AQI) remained in the very poor category for the third day, improving slightly due to increased wind speed. The AQI is expected to remain very poor or worsen to severe until Tuesday. The highest AQI was recorded at 490 in Sector 51, followed by Teri Gram (380) and Vikas Sadan (342). The marginal improvement is attributed to favorable weather conditions, but calm winds during morning and evening hours hinder effective dispersal of pollutants. The capital's AQI also improved from severe to very poor, prompting the withdrawal of measures imposed under stage IV of the Graded Response Action Plan.
Wind speed down, AQI dips to 'very poor' again
The air quality in Noida, Greater Noida, and Ghaziabad has worsened from 'poor' to 'very poor' due to low-speed winds from the northwest direction. The air quality is expected to remain 'very poor' on Tuesday as well. The AQI levels in various sectors of Noida and Greater Noida have reached alarming levels. The overall air quality in Delhi-NCR is also 'very poor'. Residents are calling for a multi-faceted approach to address the pollution issue, including enforcing construction and demolition rules and addressing traffic congestion.
