Thai princess
Maha Chakri Sirindhorn, who is on a trip to India, visited the
Indian Military Academy
in
Dehradun
and Aryabhatta Research Institute of Observational Sciences (ARIES) in
Nainital
on Thursday.
The princess, who teaches history at Chulachomklao Royal Military Academy (CRMA), interacted with Commandant Lt Gen JS Negi and held a range of discussions on training and administration aspects. The 64-year-old princess visited the IMA with a 20-member delegation of Thai diplomats.
"The visiting dignitary and the delegation were briefed on the training imparted at the IMA to Indian and Foreign Gentlemen Cadets. This was followed by a windshield tour of training facilities. The tour was also joined by the ambassador of Thailand to India," read a press statement issued by the IMA. Later in the day, the princess flew to Pantnagar airport and then visited the Circuit House in Nainital's Kathgodam. "The picture of Chipko Andolan caught her special attention and she asked about it. We explained her how women hugged trees to protect them from being cut down," said city magistrate Pratyush Singh.
After the Circuit House, she went to Devasthal Observatory to see the optical telescope set up by
Aryabhatta Institute
of Observational Sciences (ARIES) in Nainital. "The princess saw Asia’s largest telescope and asked several questions related to astronomy. She was accompanied by a group of scientists as well and she said that she wants to strengthen the bilateral relationship between Thailand and India in the field of Astronomy," said Sashi Bhushan Pandey, scientist at ARIES, who was accompanying the delegation.
The princess left ARIES late in the evening.
