MUSSOORIE: A section of the road in Mussoorie's Landour market is sinking and has developed cracks which are gradually widening. Residents reported that the buildings on the roadside are cracking and sinking, posing a grave risk to the residents and shopkeepers.
Priyanshu Goyal, a shopkeeper, said, "About 50 metres stretch of road starting from Hotel Nishima to Kohinoor building in the Landour market, has been sinking. Now, deep cracks have also appeared on the road. These cracks have also appeared on the walls of my shop."
There are about twelve shops in the affected area with residences above and below these shops, and as many as 500 people are currently residing in the area, and are at risk. "Cracks have also appeared in some buildings on the South road, which is just below the Landour market," said Rajat Aggarwal, president of the traders' association.
D.K. Jain, a resident, said, "We had requested the authorities to take a geological survey so that remedial steps could be taken to address the issue. But we do not know whether a survey has been done and what are the findings of the survey."
Speaking to TOI, the chairman of the Mussoorie Municipal Council (MMC), Anuj Gupta, said, "This is a very serious matter and the lives of Landour residents are under threat. The government should act immediately before any untoward incident happens."
The Landour market is the oldest in Mussoorie, which was established nearly 200 years ago to cater to the British troops who came for rest and recuperation at a 'convalescent centre' in Landour.
