DEHRADUN: Taking cognisance of chief minister Pushkar Singh Dhami's recent order against an "illegally running" madrassa in Veerbhatti area of Nainital district, the Uttarakhand Waqf Board (UWB) has issued notices to all the madrassas in the state to install CCTV cameras in their premises.

UWB chief executive officer (CEO) SS Usman also directed the management and administrators of all madrassas to "ensure adequate arrangements for health and personal safety of the students studying there." They have been instructed to provide a report in this regard to the waqf board within 15 days. The district administration of Nainital had on Sunday shut down the madrassa which had been allegedly running illegally in the area since 2010. The administration also claimed to have "rescued" 24 children who were living under "poor conditions" in the madrassa, with six of them reportedly suffering from multiple diseases. UWB chairman Shadab Shams told TOI that "the condition of the illegally running madrassa in Nainital was quite shocking and now, we will ensure that no such activity goes on in any other madrassa in the state."

"...Those institutions that already have CCTV cameras installed will also have to ensure that the cameras are in a good condition. If any madrassa needs financial help to install CCTV cameras, the board will provide it."
