DEHRADUN: More than a month after Uttarakhand last reported a death due to Covid-19, a person succumbed to the virus on Wednesday at AIIMS-Rishikesh raising alarm among the health authorities.
The sample positivity rate stood at 1.7% while 26 fresh cases were registered, taking the overall tally of active Covid cases in Uttarakhand to 132. While one person succumbed to the virus on April 21, no new Covid related deaths were registered in the state in May. However, in June, around 275 Covid cases were reported in just 15 days.
Dehradun recorded one dozen positive cases and 84 active cases, followed by three fresh cases in Chamoli where Badrinath shrine is located. Five cases have been reported from Nainital where Kainchi Dham was opened to tourists on Tuesday. The temple was visited by around 2 lakh pilgrims in just two days.
Uttarkashi, where Gangotri and Yamunotri shrines are located, had three new Covid cases while one case each surfaced from Almora, Bageshwar and Haridwar. Six out of 13 districts had no new Covid cases. However, doctors have suggested that random sampling must start at these shrines. At present, only about 1,500 samples are being tested every day.
