DEHRADUN: Amid increasing number of road accidents in the state, Champawat district magistrate Narendra Singh Bhandari on Monday warned the executive engineer of national highway Lohaghat section that stringent action will be initiated against him if any accident took place on the Tanakpur-Champawat road stretch. Bhandari, in a letter to the executive engineer, said stringent action would be initiated under relevant sections of IPC and disaster management act.

The DM, who is also the chairman of the district disaster management authority, expressed his anger after examining the NH-9 which is still a pothole-filled road. The road was closed for at least three hours in August due to landslides after heavy rains in the Kumaon region.

Repairing work that resumed after the monsoon was progressing at a very slow pace.

"Due to landslide NH-9 during monsoon, the road was damaged but the debris is yet to be cleared from several spots. Also, no road safety measures are taken at the accident prone areas. Resulting in the NH has been quite dangerous to ply on for the commuters," the DM said.
