Uttarakhand: Denied bicycle, 23-year-old woman kills self in Dehradun

DEHRADUN: A 23-year-old woman allegedly committed suicide after her mother refused to meet her demand of a bicycle in Dehradun's Raipur area on Friday.
According to the police, the incident happened on the intervening night of Thursday and Friday, but came to light after she was found hanging inside her room by her mother on Friday morning. The deceased, identified as Vandana Rana, was pursuing her M.Sc from a city college, said senior sub-inspector Ashish Rawat, Raipur police station.
"Rana was staying with her mother in Raipur. Her father is in the army and posted outside the state. On Thursday evening, she had demanded a bicycle from her mother Meena, but her mother refused. She then went to her room after dinner around 11.30 pm and shut the door," said Rawat.
"On Friday morning, when Rana did not open the door despite calls from her mother, the door was opened forcefully and Vandana was found hanging from a noose from the ceiling fan," he added. Rawat said that Meena informed the neighbours who called an ambulance and rushed Vandana Rana to the nearby hospital where the doctors declared her dead. "The police did not find any suicide note from the spot. A probe is on," said Rawat.
