HC notice to govt on land for Puri varsity

Cuttack: The Orissa high court has issued a notice to the state on a petition seeking return of land acquired in Puri by the govt for a proposed university by Vedanta Foundation, presently known as the Anil Agarwal Foundation.The move followed a petition filed by Navanirman Krushak Sangathan (NKS), a farmers outfit, on July 5 seeking return of land to the owners. The land acquisition process — initiated by the govt for the university between December 13, 2006 and August 21 August, 2007 — had already been quashed on November 16, 2010. On April 12, 2023, the Supreme Court had also upheld the high court’s order. When the petition was taken up for preliminary hearing on August 28, senior advocate Sidhartha Ray, representing NKS, pointed out that the high court had quashed the land acquisition proceedings initiated by the state govt and directed Vedanta to return the land to the owners.But the land is yet to be returned to their owners, Ray submitted, while seeking interim compensation for the rightful owners.

Land acquisition notice issued for bypass project

The Angamaly-Kundanoor bypass project gains momentum as the ministry of road transport and highways issues a land acquisition notification. The state government waived royalties and GST on materials, facilitating progress. The 44.7 km bypass will require 280 hectares from 17 villages. Interested parties can raise objections within 21 days of notification publication.

HC issues notices to govt in habeas corpus petition

The MP High Court has issued notices to the state government following a habeas corpus petition from a girl seeking her father's release. She argues that he is wrongly detained on fabricated charges in a land fraud case and that his prolonged detention has severely affected her family, which relies solely on his income.

Court refuses bail to man who sold land over which he had no title

A sessions court in Jabalpur denied bail to Omprakash Anand, accused of defrauding 30 people by signing bogus land sale deeds. Despite Anand's argument citing health issues and prolonged custody, the court sided with the prosecutors who argued that he had been evading arrest and could influence witnesses if released.
