Dharmapuri: A 36-year-old woman was arrested on Sunday, for stealing 3.5 sovereigns of gold ornaments and Rs 50,000 in cash from her neighbour’s house in Nallampalli Tata Nagar in Dharmapuri on Saturday.
Athiyamankottai police identified the arrested as M Selinamary.
Police said the theft took place at the residence of Sakthivel, 45, a private bus driver, when the family was on a trip to Hogenakkal. “When they returned on Sunday, the family found the gold jewellery and cash kept inside an almirah missing,” said a police officer. He added that the house’s door lock was intact, which raised suspicion of insider involvement.
Investigators collected fingerprints from the almirah and identified Selinamary, who lived next door as the culprit. During questioning, she confessed to using duplicate keys to open the locked house and commit the theft.
Police also recovered the stolen gold and cash from her possession. She was remanded in judicial custody and lodged at the Salem central prison.
