Farmers in Tamil Nadu's Trichy staged a protest, demanding the release of Cauvery River water from Karnataka. Meanwhile, farmers in Karnataka's Mandya are protesting to stop water from being released to Tamil Nadu. The Cauvery Water Management Authority (CWMA) had ordered Karnataka to release 5000 cusecs of water for 15 days, but Tamil Nadu has sought an increase in the amount. The court has refused to interfere in the dispute, stating that the CWMA and Cauvery Water Regulation Committee are monitoring the situation.
Cauvery row: Karnataka hints at not releasing full quota to Tamil Nadu
The state of Karnataka in India may not release the full daily quota of water to Tamil Nadu as directed by the Cauvery Water Management Authority (CWMA). The state cabinet discussed the pros and cons of defying the directive but did not come to a conclusion. Karnataka has been releasing 3,000 to 4,000 cusecs of water daily but cannot release the full 5,000 cusecs. The state will seek the opinion of elected representatives on the water-sharing issue and may approach the Supreme Court to explain its constraints.
