TN truck owners to refrain from operating vehicles in Karnataka during bandh

Salem: Following the announcement of a bandh in Karnataka, the Tamil Nadu Truck Owners Federation has decided not to operate their vehicles in Karnataka on Tuesday. They have also appealed to not cause any damage to trucks from Tamil Nadu in the name of bandh. Speaking to reporters in Salem on Monday, president of the Lorry Owners Federation, Tamil Nadu (LOF-TN), C Dhanraj said a few farmers groups and pro-Kannada organisations have called for a one-day bandh across Karnataka on Tuesday in connection with the row over Cauvery water release. “Some unidentified people pelted six Tamil Nadu trucks with stones and damaged the windshields in Karnataka on Monday,” he said. He also pointed out how protesters have always attacked vehicles from Tamil Nadu especially trucks, whenever the Cauvery water issue erupts. Dhanraj said truck owners and drivers have been operating their vehicles across the country without any discrimination on caste, religion and languages. “Why do only protesters from Karnataka always target trucks from Tamill Nadu,” he questioned, appealing to protesters to not damage vehicles. The LOF-TN has appealed to truck drivers and owners not to operate their vehicles inside or via Karnataka, during the bandh. The federation said thousands of trucks are returning to Tamil Nadu from several parts of the country while trucks from the state are also headed to several states via Karnataka. “We have advised the drivers to stay safe with their vehicles if they have already entered Karnataka,” Dhanraj added.

The court has refused to interfere in the dispute, stating that the CWMA and Cauvery Water Regulation Committee are monitoring the situation.

Cauvery row: Karnataka hints at not releasing full quota to Tamil Nadu

The state of Karnataka in India may not release the full daily quota of water to Tamil Nadu as directed by the Cauvery Water Management Authority (CWMA). The state cabinet discussed the pros and cons of defying the directive but did not come to a conclusion. Karnataka has been releasing 3,000 to 4,000 cusecs of water daily but cannot release the full 5,000 cusecs. The state will seek the opinion of elected representatives on the water-sharing issue and may approach the Supreme Court to explain its constraints.
