COIMBATORE: The number of murder cases registered in the Coimbatore range - comprising Coimbatore, the Nilgiris, Tirupur and Erode districts - decreased from 151 in 2021 to 95 this year (till November), said R Sudhakar, the inspector general of police (IG) (west zone).

Overall in the west zone, including Salem, Namakkal, Dhramapuri and Krishnagiri districts besides the four districts, there is a 30% fall in the number of murder cases registered, the IG told reporters after a review meeting with police officials from the Coimbatore range at the district police office in the city on Tuesday.

He said that police personnel were working to improve the conviction rate of cases registered under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (Pocso) Act. “Only 17 Pocso cases ended up in convictions last year compared to 87 cases this year so far,” said Sudhakar.

On ganja sales, the IG said he aims to make the west zone a ganja-free zone in Tamil Nadu by 2023. “As of now, 821 villages were declared as ganja-free villages in the Coimbatore range. We registered 1,054 ganja cases, arrested 1,420 peddlers and seized 1,012kg of ganja from them. Nineteen of the arrested ganja peddlers were detained under the Goondas Act. We have also frozen the bank accounts of 308 ganja peddlers in the range.”

He said as many as 2,220 gutka cases were registered and 2,370 accused were arrested in the range this year. “We seized 44,358kg of the banned tobacco products from them.”
